Woodblock printing

A relief print technique involving the use of wooden print blocks. Includes both cross-grain woodcuts using blocks made of ordinary wooden boards and end-grain woodcuts using hardwood cut in cross-section. Transmitted to Japan from Tang China during the Nara period and developed rapidly during the Edo period with the appearance of ukiyo-e.
